Julie Slanker, Fraternity/Sorority
Task Force, Senior and Gamma Phi Beta member
This
has been an eventful year for Florida Tech
fraternities and sororities. Besides
normal activities, such as philanthropy,
mixers, formals and intramural sports, they
have responded to some community-wide changes.
In summer 2004 the Office of Student Life
hired Sara Mayer as the new assistant director
for student activities in charge of fraternity
and sorority affairs. Sara has a master’s
degree in higher education administration
from Georgia Southern University and four
years of experience working with fraternities
and sororities. She is also active in her
own Inter/National organization. Sara brings
fresh ideas to the Florida Tech community
and works with the chapters, the Intra-fraternity
Council and the Panhellenic Council to
make improvements. Contact Sara at smayer@fit.edu.
One of the main objectives for the 2004-2005
school year has been to create the Florida
Institute of Technology Fraternity/Sorority
Task Force. The task force was established
to evaluate the current status of the
fraternity/sorority community and write
a 5-10-year plan for
improvement. Created in fall 2004, the
task force has been conducting interviews
of chapter
members, alumni, advisers, Florida Tech
faculty and staff, and administrators.
It will be
exciting to see what the task force plan
will include. We all are looking forward
to strengthening our own organizations,
as well as the community as a whole.
The
fraternity/sorority community would like
to welcome a new colony, Phi Sigma
Sigma.
The sorority came on campus in spring
2005, bringing the number of Inter/National
sororities
at Florida Tech to three. The Panhellenic
council and a local group chose Phi
Sigma Sigma because of its strong alumni
base
in the area and values of individuality
and
community involvement. Representatives
from the Inter/National headquarters
recruited over 24 women in just two
short weeks and
made plans to install the Florida Tech
Phi
Sigma Sigma chapter in
April, 2005.
The College of Engineering announces
the formation of a Hall of Fame to
honor its
outstanding alumni. Dr. Muzaffar
Shaikh, professor of systems engineering,
has
been named the chair of the COE Alumni
Hall
of Fame Committee. The Hall of Fame
will honor
our distinguished alumni of the Florida
Tech College of Engineering.
“
We want something that will inspire
current Florida Tech students
to likewise achieve
great success. The Hall of Fame
will honor individuals who have
accomplished great things
in their public or professional
lives,” said
Dr. Shaikh.
The first inductees
could be honored as early as
spring 2006. Dr. Shaikh
welcomes nominations
for the Hall of Fame. He may
be reached by e-mail at mshaikh@fit.edu or by
telephone at (321) 674-7345.
Nominations
should
include:
Nominee name, degree, degree
year, telephone number and e-mail address,
along with
a brief
justification. Nominators should
also include their own name
and contact information.
Deadline for the
receipt of nominations is January 16,
2006.
