Fine Arts Meet Performing Arts at Fusion in Fabric
Fusion in Fabric RunwayMore than 250 people, sharing a passion for the textile arts, attended Fusion in Fabric in Florida Tech’s Clemente Center in February. “It was very successful and we all had a great time,” said Mike Mintern, Florida Tech senior director for development.

The gala featured a fashion show of wearable art by Ruth Funk. Boris Chepelev choreographed the show and members of the Space Coast Ballet modeled the colorful garments. After the dinner, two beautiful Persian carpets donated by Falasiri Oriental Rugs were auctioned. Dr. Gordon Nelson, dean of the College of Science, was the top bidder for one, a Qum silk carpet.

Through April, Evans Library hosted the first campus exhibit of the Ruth Funk collection. It was the artist’s first Florida Tech showcase of jewelry, wearable art, art books, textiles and cultural artifacts from around the world. Initial selections were made from among the thousands of items she has donated to the university.

“ Thanks to Ruth’s generosity, Florida Tech is poised to begin a new educational experience based on the science of art and design,” said President Anthony J. Catanese.

Honor Roll Additions
Even at a technological university we occasionally get programming surprises. The following people were mistakenly omitted from the 2003-2004 Galaxy Society listing due to a programming glitch. We apologize and ask that you remember the words of Voltaire: “ Love truth and pardon error.”

Fusion in Fabric
Enjoying a night of color, glamour and successful fund-raising are (L to R) Jack Lenor Larsen, the “dean” of modern textile design; Ruth Funk, Florida Tech benefactor whose gifts germinated “Fusion in Fabric”; Sara Catanese and Pres. Anthony J. Catanese. On the eve of the gala, Larsen presented the first lecture in the new Ruth Funk Lecture Series.
