An interdisciplinary faculty collaboration,
Dr. Debra Blenis, Dr. Monica Baloga,
Dr. Cecilia Knoll and Dr. Maria Pozo
de Fernandez, made presentations at
the 2005 Annual Conference for the
National Consortium of Specialized
Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science
and Technology, held in St. Louis,
Mo.
Blenis presented, “Motivate to
educate;” Baloga presented “Using
SMART Sympodium technology in the general
chemistry lecture;” Knoll presented, “Encouraging
Girls/Women to choose science and engineering
careers;” and Pozo de Fernandez
presented “GETSMART at Florida
Tech.”

Dr. Annie Becker’s paper, “Using
handheld technology to monitor diabetes
in remote communities,” was awarded “Best
Paper” at the 2005 Information
Resource Management Association International
Conference, to be held in San Diego
in May. Her research was funded by
the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Theresa Domagalski (with Dr. Lisa
Steelman, School of Psychology) published “The
impact of work events and disposition
on the experience and expression of
employee anger,” in the journal,
Organizational Analysis. Domagalski
also finished a book chapter, “Gender
and the Expression of Emotions at Work,” to
be included in the book, Gender and
Communication Issues at Work.
Dr. David Hott presented two papers, “A
model community for adults with developmental
disabilities,” and “Micro
payments keep growing, growing and
growing,” at the 2005 Industry,
Engineering and Management Systems
Conference in Cocoa Beach. Dr. LuAnn
Bean coauthored both papers.
A paper by Dr. Julie Siciliano was
accepted for presentation at the 2005
Eastern Academy of Management Conference,
held in Springfield, Mass. The paper
is titled, “Moving beyond pre-Frederick
Taylor practices: A research-based
approach to continuous improvement
in business education.” |

Dr. William Allen, Dr. Gerald Marin and Dr. Luis Rivera wrote “Automated
detection of malicious reconnaissance to enhance network security” to present
at the IEEE SoutheastCon 2005, held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Dr. Walter P. Bond, Turky Al-Otaiby ’04
Ph.D. and Mohsen Alsharif ’05
Ph.D. presented “Toward software
requirements modularization using hierarchical
clustering techniques” at the
43rd ACM Southeast Conference at Kennesaw
State University in Georgia.
Dr. Philip Chan and graduate student
Hyoung Rae Kim wrote “Implicit
indicators for interesting web pages” for
presentation at the International Conference
on Web Information Systems and Technologies
in Miami, Fla.
Dr. Fred Ham, graduate student Heriberto Delgado and former faculty member,
Dr. Michael Thursby, wrote “A Novel Neural Network for the Synthesis
of Antennas and Microwave Devices.” The paper will be published in IEEE
Transactions on Neural Networks.
Dr. Lee Harris received an $88,000
grant from the Sebastian Inlet Tax
District to continue his work in operating
a wave and weather data collection
system at the inlet.
Dr. Paul Jennings presented “Effect
of temperature on membrane separation
of gases from the Martian atmosphere” at
the 2005 Space Technology and Applications
International Forum in Albuquerque,
N.M.
Dr. Cem Kaner published “Testing
library Web sites for usability” in
Knowledge Quest.
Dr. Samuel Kozaitis, Dr. Fred Ham
and Dr. Muzaffar Shaikh were invited
guests of Harris Corp. to participate
in Engineering Week activities. Shaikh
and Ham presented “Decision and
risk analysis models” to employees
of the Government Communications System
Division.
Dr. George Maul made a presentation
at “Towards the Establishment
of a Tsunami Mitigation System for
the Indian Ocean,” a meeting
in Paris of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic
Commission of UNESCO.
Dr. Ronald Menezes presented “A
perspective on the use of self-organization
in tuple space coordination systems” at
the International Conference on Artificial
Intelligence Session on Swarm Intelligence
in Las Vegas, Nev.
Dr. Debasis Mitra presented “Incremental
scheduling with qualitative temporal
information” at the 18th International
Conference of Industrial and Engineering
Applications of Artificial Intelligence
and Expert Systems in Bari, Italy.
Dr. Kunal Mitra presented “Optical
tomography system using short pulse
laser for early breast cancer detection” at
the Technology Transfer Conference
in Orlando, Fla.
Dr. Ashok Pandit and visiting professor
Chi Hyueon Youn presented “Description
of a continuous simulation model for
estimating long-term efficiencies of
wet retention/detention basins.” Their
presentation was at the 8th Biennial
Conference on Storm Water Research
and Watershed Management, held in Tampa,
Fla.
Dr. Muzaffar Shaikh was invited by
Harris Corporation’s RF Communication
Division in Rochester, N.Y. to present
the Master’s Degree Program in
Systems Engineering. The division also
requested Florida Tech to offer the
program in late summer 2005.
Dr. Marius Silaghi and doctoral student
Kishore Kattamuri ’03 M.S., wrote “Supporting
debates over citizen initiatives” for
presentation at the National Conference
on Digital Government Research in Atlanta,
Ga.
Dr. Manolis Tomadakis and Teri Robertson ’02 M.S., published “Survival
and relaxation time, pore size distribution moments and viscous permeability
in random unidirectional fiber structures” in the Journal of Chemical
Physics.
Dr. John Windsor organized the sessions
on oceanographic and atmospheric sciences
at the Florida Academy of Sciences
(FAS) annual meeting, held at the University
of South Florida. Dr. John Trefry,
FAS president, will lead the annual
meeting at Florida Tech next year. |

Dr. Juanita Baker and her husband,
Richard Baker, received the 2004 Environmental
Enhancement Award from The Friends
of St. Sebastian River, of Roseland,
for their book, Reflections of Blue
Cypress Lake, and for their support
of environmental causes.
Dr. Richard Elmore was installed as
vice president of the Florida Society
of Clinical Hypnosis at its annual
meeting in Naples, Fla. Membership
includes physicians, dentists, psychologists
and other health care professionals
in the state.
Dr. Radhika Krishnamurthy chaired
two paper sessions at the annual conference
of the Society for Personality Assessment
in Chicago. She presented a factor
analytic research paper, titled, “MMPI-A
structural summary: Integrating new
scales and subscales,” and a
paper co-presented with graduate student,
Kristin Henley. It was titled, “The
utility of personality testing in treatment
planning.”
Dr. Judith Strother made a presentation
at the International Association of
Science and Technology for Development
in Grindelwald, Switzerland. Her paper
was titled, “Developing online
English language training for specific
purposes: A challenging collaborative
effort.” She also chaired a session
on Web-
based education curriculum and courseware development.
Dr. Frank Webbe wrote a review of
the book, Ions in the Brain: Normal
Function, Seizures and Stroke. His
review is titled, “Little Things
that Go Bump in the Brain.”
A manuscript by Dr. David Wilder was
accepted for publication in the journal,
Education and Treatment of Children.
The paper describes a study that evaluated
a procedure for increasing the on-task
behavior of third and fourth grade
students in classrooms. |

Dr. Marcus Hohlmann was awarded an
$8,000 monthly grant for the summer
by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
Physics Center at Fermi National Accelerator
Laboratory for work at the center.
He and graduate student Samir Guragain
helped prepare CMS, a huge particle
physics experiment. “The LHC
will be the world’s most powerful
particle accelerator,” said Hohlmann.
Song-Kyoo Kim, ’02, and Nicole
Hoier ’95 M.S., ’00 Ed.S.
published “Human resource allocation
applications of stochastic maintenance
models with super-reserve backups” in
Mathematical Methods in the Applied
Sciences.

Dr. David Mutschler, Patuxent Graduate
Center, presented “Parallelization
of the joint integrated mission model
using cautious optimistic control” at
the Summer Simulation Conference
in Philadelphia, Pa.
Dr. Barbara Peery,
former director and now adjunct
faculty, Fort Lee
Graduate Center, has received a
five-month Fulbright grant to the University
of Joensuu, Finland. She will teach
international human resources and finance.
Dr.
Paul Battaglia replaces Dr. Lloyd
Muller as director of the
National
Capitol Region Graduate Center
in Alexandria, Va. Muller retired
on
July 31. |
